Big clans have big bases, AKs and other heavy weapons on day two. I do not advice Rust to people because you do not stand a chance against the big clans. And if you want to be ultra sneaky, place dirt over your entrance before you go offline. All you need is a single mining shaft and you can camouflage it even easier with trees ( if you are in the forest biome ). Its way more easy in 7D2D to make hidden bases. Year ago, i even had a base under river water rock. Big clans out resource you, no matter how many layer you put, they simply blow their way into your base. Relative small maps, the only underground locations like caves are shown in online maps. As a solo player you will get constantly off-line raided because its hard to hide. If you're lucky, most of the zombies will break down the door and funnel outside, missing you entirely. Might as well get the zombies working on the front door of a second building while you wait on the first. When you want to explore a new building, make some noise by the front door and wait. Zombies tend to walk in straight lines (mostly) so why not choose those lines yourself? Line those zombies up so they walk straight towards your kill zones!
Plant trees around your base to create natural funnel points. Vault doors are usually much harder to break than the blocks directly next to them. You'll build up your athletics and level up faster. Jump constantly while you are running around in the first few weeks of game play. You can use the coins more than you'll need that low-quality gun part. Build a lip around the roof edge with wood frames. Build gardens on top of buildings with flat roofs. Takes longer than selling stacks but works! Sell everything to the trader one item at a time for maximum leveling of your barter skill. Use cans early on, switch to bottles once your campfire has a cooking pot. Use wood spikes if you plan on fighting back during a horde, use log spikes if you plan on hiding out. Log spikes last much longer and do more damage. Wood spikes slow down zombies but break fairly easily. Place a spike down in your base, grab a few bandages and walk on the spike over and over again. Walking over log spikes is a great way to level up your armor stats. Find some sand and start digging early on. Shovels seem to generate the biggest gain of experience over time. Build your base on the roof of the gas station for an extra layer of protection. You've essentially now transformed the natural concrete foundation into a concrete wall! Go even further by adding a wall of pillars on the edge of your concrete foundation and you're well protected. Final steps: Place log spikes at the bottom of the trench and build a small lip over your trench using wood frames, catwalks or iron bars to prevent the spider zombies from climbing up the concrete. 
Dig out the dirt on the outside edges of your trench at a 45 degree angle, leading zombies to the bottom of the trench as they approach your building. Dig a trench in the dirt around the concrete base, 3 squares deep. Gas stations are the best places to check out, they usually have a concrete base under them.

Don't forget to take a break to get air while cracking it! (This might only still work on the console version, I've been playing modded PC lately and haven't confirmed this on vanilla PC.) Swim down and look around, it's usually in a small cave.
